Hi Ezren –
I know you were a little distracted today, but I’m really impressed with how well you played Moto Perpetual. I attached that one below for easy reference, feel free to try to increase the speed. We worked on the new, professional way to hold the bow. This will help make you sound even better! Here’s a short video I found that hleps…Read more

Start a warm-up as always with the long notes, and then try the F scale, two octaves. (Don’t forget Bb). Do quarter notes, and then try 8th notes.
Then challenge yourself with the 16th note etude! You’ll see the version below has the counting written in to help with the rhythm. If you get thrown off, try saying the counting out loud. Clap…Read more

Hey There!
Let’s keep working on the Crecsendo Click Song. Once again, I attached it with counting written in. Jump back to last week’s lesson and play along with the video my friend made. It’s super helpful!
And we’ll definitely do HLJ blues next time. I attached again below. Also a funk beat. This is similar to HLJ but you’ll need some more…Read more

Hi Ezren –
This week we really started working on controlling our speed! So important for musicians to be able to play smoothly at any speed, without going faster or slower on certain parts of the song. It makes music more enjoyable to listen to, as well as easier to play along with other musicians.
Practice slowly first, on the Orchestral…Read more

These lessons were all about the Crescendo Click!
We’ve worked on drum rolls, and syncopation, now let’s build some real confidence with the 16th note counting!
I attached it below here with the counting written in. Practice saying it in rhythm. Click your sticks only on the numbers yet say everything. Are your sticks steady? If not, it’s not…Read more

Sounding great!
Especially nice work with the hand control part of Syncopation Nation – now let’s work on the counting in that tricky middle part. You’ll see an attached version below with the counting written in. The red ones you don’t play obviously, but that don’t mean they ain’t important! Count out loud, tap your feet, whatever you need to…Read more

Sounding really great!
Keep working on the Allegro – I love how smooth it’s getting. And then – the Can Can. You’ll see it attached below (#92) This song uses all the notes in the D scale. (D and A string only).
You know how this one is supposed to sound so GO SLOW!!! Make sure the notes sound right to you. If they don’t… move you fingers…Read more

Alright!
Some great stuff happening with the Pentatonic scale! The next song we’re going to work on uses the G pentatonic scale. This is Worksong.
Take a look at the G pentatonic scale attached. It uses Bb, but no A’s or E’s. Play through it a couple times and get familiar with it.
Then lesson to Worksong in the video below. You’ll see the…Read more -

Great Work again Ezren!
Use the Allegro as warm-up now that it’s sounding easier for you. Play it as smooth as possible.
Then, it’s time for the Blue Danube! It’s attached below. Let’s work on it VERY SLOWLY first. Then we’ll speed it up. I want to make sure our fingers are perfect before we try to go too fast.
See you next week!

Great work today Ezren!
You got the fingers really working in the right spot! Remember, it helps to hold the violin up on the posture, and do your best to press down with the fingers (not the nails. Not let’s work on controlling our speed. We slowed everything down today to keep our fingers and bow moving smoothly through the whole song.

Hi Isaiah,
Awesome work on the Moto Perpetual. Wow!
You got some fast fingers. Attached below you’ll see a song attached called 16th note etude. We will be working on Number 4 next time. There are a few tricky things about it. First of all – the 16th note rhythms. I’ll go over all those with you next time. For now don’t worry about the rhythm…Read more

Hey Ezren!
You worked so hard today! Way to stay focused and work those fingers.
As a warm-up, let’s start with letters A and B on the Scale Warm-up Page. The idea is to stay smooth and steady with the bow, and be sure to place the fingers in the correct place!
Then, let’s get some speed happening with the Moto Perpetual. The idea is get the…Read more

Hi David –
Nice playing today! I think you’re really getting a handle on the syncopation stuff. Review Lesson 4 in the drum beats pdf attached below. We’ll start with this song next time. Do the bass and the snare separately and then try to play both at the same time!
Pick a couple more stick control exercises from the book, and remember to…Read more

Nice Work!
I love the line about “being precise with where you stop”. That is drumming summed up in one sentence!
Take keep picking examples form the stick control book – (you’ll find it in “warm up book” post) and keep the hands as steady as possible. These warm up exercises are an opportunity to focus on posture and hand position to make sure…Read more -

Hey David –
Great seeing you again!
SO what we’re working on is getting a really solid foundation with the those quarter notes and 8th note syncopation. We’ll get to the point where don’t even have to think about them anymore! Remember to count yourself off. It’s always a good idea to have the beat in your head before you start to play. (Use…Read more

Hi Isaiah!
Great seeing you again.
We’ll keep warming up with some long notes, listen closely to be aware of when that A sounds too low!
Play Moto Perpetual slowly, and find those spots where the A doesn’t sound right. Once you feel like you’ve corrected it, speed that song up.
We played it a 60 BPM (beats per minute) today – let’s try to…Read more - Load More
