That scale keeps getting faster. We did quarter notes and 8th notes at 70 beats per minute today. Next time we’ll try 80!
Minuet is sounding stronger each week. It’s a challenging, long song. Keep at it!
We also got through a bunch of Sugar today. One thing we’ve been talking about is how to figure out a melody even if you don’t…Read more -

Hi Guys-
Sounded great as always today, and it was great to have you back Kristin! Today we learned the song Blue Monk, which I had written quickly and we found a few mistakes!
Visit the post to find the corrected version of that tune, as well as one of the original recordings.
Note – there is a high Eb in the music. For trumpet, that’s played…Read more -

Here’s the music for Blue Monk – as well as an original recoding. Take a lesson, you’ll hear the melody played by the piano player Thelonius Monk the first time. How is it different from when the sax player plays it?
Below, you’ll find the music attached. This uses a lot chromatic, or “in bewtween’ notes (sharps and flats). Jazz and classical…Read more

Great work today. We did the warm up section C this time. Let’s focus on those slurs! Keep the bow moving for 4 notes at a time. We’ll try to do the English Folk Tune a little faster next time. AND check out the mystery tune below. As always… Green = D string, Red = A string, and Black = E string.
It’s a little tricky – can you…Read more -

Keep working on Cannon in D – It’s a little tricky but fun and very pretty once you get it. Use the music and try to play along with the recording.
And since we had a birthday in our midst – Check out happy birthday attached below. It’s a little tough. The green notes are on the D string. The red ones are on the A string. And the…Read more -

Then Minuet – I posted a new version of it that is totally low notes. Pick a version you’re comfortable with.

One lesson left!
We’ll do Sugar a little bit next time, and maybe try to play along with the recording. And Let’s Go Band – a classic spring concert tune is attached below. It’s easy and fun to play. You’ll need an F# which is played with the middle finger.
See you next week!

Hi Drummers –
Good work today. Pop over to that stick control page and pick a pattern – see if you can start slow then do it fast!
Also visit the Hip-hop beat – if you can do both parts at once – that’s pretty slick.

Hi Saxes –
Great work today!
We started with the C scale as usual, and to really get the fingers going, we tried it as 16th notes, which is pretty tough. It can help to think about it in terms of the counting. We’d say it like this: 1 e + a 2 e + a 3 e + a 4 e + (where + = ‘and’) The numbers are on the beat. If you don’t have a metronome, tap…Read more - Load More
