Hi! Here’s A great new song. WITH NO HIGH NOTES!
You’ll find the music attached below.
This one is all about style. It’s an old jazz fusion song from the late 1960s, but I think you’ll like it. It was one of my favorites when I was learning to play music. (And no – I was not alive in the 1960s, I’m not that old – it’s just a cool…Read more

The use of “displaced” 16th notes (16th note groupings that do not start on the beat, or the “and”, also known as syncopation) in the bass is common in hip hop style drum beats. Focus on the bass first, and then the snare. If you can put them both together – you really have something!

Hi Drummers,
Great work today! As always, try out the Warm up Book for some challenging sticking exercises.
Then – visit “Hip Hop Beat”. This is a fun challenge. Play the bass part – you’ll notice that there are some 16th note ‘syncopations’. We’ll work on this more in the next couple weeks.
Also – Make sure you are comfortable playing the…Read more -

Hi Saxes!
Great work with Believer! Keep working on that tune – and challenge yourself to play it along with the original recording. For our last two lessons though – I’d like to focus on the jazz song Sugar. This is a tune that I heard when I was about your age and I really loved it. I’m happy to be able to share it with all of you. Visit the…Read more -

This is a classic jazz tune by the tenor saxophonists Stanley Turrentine
Listen to the tune – then check out the music below!
He plays the melody, and then improvises (makes up a melody) based on the melody notes. In this song, as with many jazz, blues and rock songs, the melody is based on a PENTATONIC SCALE, that is a group of five notes.…Read more

hi Trumpets –
Today we started a new song called Mishugana Boogey! It’s the kind of song that we’d typically do in our school concerts! It’s pretty fun. We’ll work on it the next two weeks – and I posted a version of it with all the notes written in, and a recording!
Have fun! -

Hey Guys!
Here’s the song Mishugana Boogey! You’ll notice some Ebs… that note is played by pressing the second and third finger. It should sound a little bit lower than a regular E.
There are also B’s (middle finger) and Bbs (first finger). In this song they are all low.
Listen to the recording to hear how the song and the rhythms go.

Hi Saxes!
Today we talked about improvising! Creating your own melody based on a preset group of notes can be a challenge, but it’s also lots of fun. We’re using the Pentatonic scale (or the blues scale) to come up with some new ideas.
Visit the Pentatonic and Blues scale post and get familiar with those notes, and start mixing up the notes and…Read more -

Thanks so much for coming in on a Wednesday. You all did so great!
Really impressed with that strumming and chord changing. Let’s keep practicing like that!
